3 days after we had our civil ceremony we went on a mini moon to Marrakech for 5 days. We went direct with ryanair and had booked about six months in advance so our flights worked out at just a little over 400 euro.
We stayed in Mogador Palace in a superior double room with a poolside view. The hotel was stunning, the staff were so helpful and attentive. The hotel is a 10 minutes drive from Djemaa El Fna square and from Marrakesh Airport. It features an indoor pool, multiple outdoor pools, a garden and fitness centre with a sauna, hammam and hot tub.
The hotel has 3 restaurants serving international and Moroccan food as well as a pool bar. There was a lovely man at reception serving Moroccan tea and treats throughout the day.
Marrakech in January is beautiful. It was in the high 20s most days except for one day when we felt like we were being cooked alive! If you like oranges you will love Marrakech as orange trees grow like weeds there.
We did the typical tours around the markets and up into the Atlas mountains where we had a guide take us around on camels. I haggled for everything including the guided tours and found that you should never pay more than a third of what they originally ask.
The begging is pretty intense and it’s actually the children who will keep it going the longest, luckily they only ask men for money. The guys with monkeys on leads will follow you if you even glance their way and will expect you to pay them for merely looking. I personally found it very upsetting to see the conditions of the monkeys and tried my best to avoid them.
I only saw a few snake charmers and before I knew it I had a snake on me, at this point you are going to have to pay them. We spent a grand total of two minutes with the snakes and they tried to charge us 20 euro each, we gave them around 3 euro total. They were not happy and crowed Eanan looking for more money, it was not very busy at the time and there was a heavy police presence so I just pulled him away in the direction of the police and they gave up.
There are many beautiful gardens and old ruins to explore and there is a real sence of history in the city. Even though Marrakech is so close to Europe it is like stepping back in time so don’t expect good wifi anywhere!
We recently had our civil ceremony, since we are having a big wedding on our one year anniversary I wanted a simple 1950s style dress for the civil. I looked around online but most of the dresses I found seemed to be for much taller ladies so I went into Silver needle to see if they could make one for me.
The ladies in Silver needle were so nice and professional. They had a great selection of material for me to pick from and listened to what I needed from the dress. I told them that I wanted to be comfortable so I didn’t want the dress to be tight, I knew I had a 5 course meal after the ceremony! They advised me on an Italian silk blend material and I had 5 fittings, the last one 3 weeks before the day.
I’ll be going back to them to get my wedding dress fitted and would recommend them to anyone who would like to have their dress made. My dress cost 360 Euro including the under skirt. The belt was 100 Euro.
Previously I posted about Michael K who made my engagement ring and did an amazing job. We knew we couldn’t go anywhere else to have our wedding bands made after the service received and we have not be disappointed.
It was actually harder to decide on wedding bands. I again wanted a unique ring, I wanted it to look great without the engagement ring but I didn’t want it to distract from the engagement ring when I wear them together. I was probably even more annoying, sending at least double the amount of questions and photos of rings to Michael until he came up with my band. When I saw the design I knew instantly that it was the perfect fit!
Eanan took equally as long to design his wedding band. He wanted stones too but still wanted a sleek and masculine look. Eanan had decided that a d-shape 6mm band felt the most comfortable on him. Michael suggested that the stones be set horizontal using a bezel setting as Eanan works with his hands this would be the most secure setting for him.
Today we took a trip to Ikea with Eanan’s parents to tick another big thing off the wedding list, tables! As we have decided not to get married in a hotel after our meal we must provide pretty much everything we need for our reception which will be in a separate part of the estate.
As we are having 110 people at our wedding it has worked out cheaper for us to buy our tables rather than to rent them. The venue will provide us with chairs which is very handy as I don’t know where we would store even more wedding furniture.
Ikeas Christmas shop has opened and they have a few bits that could work for a winter wedding. Here are a few things I came by today:
Today I went to Wedding World in Galway with my 3 bridesmaids, one of whom recently got engaged to try on some wedding dresses!
Jenny and I shared our hour long appointment and the staff were brilliant, they were very helpful with suggesting dresses we had not picked out but were not pushy at the same time. Jenny being very tall and myself being very short, both had different styles in mind and Wedding World had plenty of options for us to pick from.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when going wedding dress shopping.
Both of my wedding dresses are Justin Alexander designs. The new collect has arrived and it is beautiful. Check it out!

Since we are having a formal sit down meal I have been looking for unique place cards.
I’ve used scrabble tiles which I got from Aliexpress. I got 4 bags of 100 ties for 10 euro. A word of warning in all 4 bags there were very few A’s and way too many Zs! It took just under a month for these to arrive from China.
I used a glue gun to stick the tiles together side by side. For longer names I will be using nicknames, a decision I made after putting together my first Catherine and before attempting to put together a Francesca!
I have glued these on some nice card and have sat them on top of tiny wooden easels that I also got from Aliexpress but I don’t want to spoil this for our guests for I will update this post after the wedding with the finished products.
